Revelator currently supports adding advances only at the Payee level, so an advance will be recouped from all contracts with that payee.
Advances and recoupment of advances aren't applied directly to assets. Instead, tie the assets with royalties to recoup against to a recouping payee on a contract, as outlined in the advance and recoupment steps below.
In general, for advance recoupment for the same payee entity to be applied separately across different sets of assets, there is the option to:
- Create a separate contract for each set of assets, with a different PayeeId instance of the payee entity on each contract
- As well, each PayeeId instance should have its corresponding advance amount created and saved to its transactions
Payee Level: Input a general advance to the Payee's PayeeId
After a PayeeId for a Payee has been created by adding the Payee to a Contract
- Go to Royalties → Payees and select the Payee with the corresponding PayeeId
- Click on the Payee → Transactions → Add transaction → Advance
- Enter the advance payment as a positive amount and save

Tracking recoupment of a contract advance against a Payee balance
Under our current payee advance framework, if you would like to have an advance recoupment from royalties for a specific asset or set of assets against a Payee's balance, then
- The PayeeId instance of the Payee on the asset's or asset set's contract should not be used on any other contracts - in other words, the PayeeId should be exclusive to the specified contracts
- Save the Payee name with the advance-recouping PayeeId to reflect that it applies only to the specified assets, e.g., by saving this version of the Payee as "Payee ABC (Recouping) - Assets XYZ".
If the Payee is needed on another non-recouping contract, create a different PayeeId instance for that contract by saving the non-exclusive Payee instance name without extra descriptors, e.g., just "Payee ABC".
Rules and Limits
If you import transactions in bulk, the Contract ID column doesn't create a separate balance per contract. To track an advance against one deal or asset separately, use a dedicated payee, as described above.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I enter advances given to artists by labels?
There's no dedicated advance workflow yet. Manually add an Advance transaction to reduce the payee's balance. Advances are tracked at the payee level and aren't tied to a specific contract or asset. To track an advance separately, create a dedicated payee account.
