Compilations and multi-artist projects can be tricky, as DSPs (Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, etc.) all have different rules for how credits should be displayed. To make things easier, Revelator now handles this complexity for you automatically.
Why this matters
- Cleaner deliveries: Get your releases accepted the first time, without crediting errors.
- More flexibility: No more forced “Various Artists” when it doesn’t apply.
- Better fan experience: Credits display correctly on DSPs, improving discovery and engagement.
How it works
- Compilation toggle: When creating a release, you’ll see a field “Is it a compilation?”. Set this to Yes if the release has multiple primary artists.
- Artist credit rules:
- If it’s a compilation, you can add as many artists as needed.
- The platform applies DSP-specific rules to decide when to display Various Artists vs. a main artist.
- Edge cases supported: Tribute albums, mixtapes, and Best Of collections are now formatted correctly.
- Consistent credits: Performing artists are aligned at both track and release level.
Step-by-step: Create a compilation release
- Go to Catalog → Releases and click Create Release.
- Under Compilation, select Yes.
- Add all relevant artists.
- Fill out the rest of the release details (language, title, description, etc.).
- Save and proceed — the system will apply DSP rules automatically.
FAQs
Q: Do I always need to mark a release with multiple artists as a compilation?
A: No. Some multi-artist projects still have a main artist. The system helps decide when to apply “Various Artists” vs. keep a primary name.
Q: What happens if I forget to set a release as a compilation?
A: DSPs may reject it, or credits may display incorrectly. Always set it at creation if it applies.
Q: Can I change compilation status later?
A: Yes, you can edit the release and update the compilation toggle.
