Understanding The YouTube Partner Program (YPP)

Modified on Tue, 28 Jul at 4:23 PM

Before a YouTube channel can earn money from its videos, it must be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). This article explains what YPP is, how to qualify, and how it relates to linking a channel to Revelator’s MCN.

What is the YouTube Partner Program?

YPP is YouTube’s monetization program. A channel that is accepted into YPP can earn revenue from ads shown on its videos, from views by YouTube Premium and YouTube Music subscribers, and from other channel monetization features such as memberships and Super Chat.

YPP eligibility requirements

To apply for YPP, a channel must meet one of the following thresholds and satisfy the general requirements below.

PathSubscribers requiredWatch/view requirement
Long-form video1,000 subscribers4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months
YouTube Shorts1,000 subscribers10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days

General requirements:

  • Comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and monetization policies
  • No active Community Guidelines strikes on the channel
  • Two-step verification enabled on the Google account
  • An active AdSense account linked (or be ready to set one up)
  • Located in a country where YPP is available
Note YouTube periodically updates YPP requirements. For the most current criteria, refer to YouTube’s official YPP page.

YPP and Revelator’s MCN are separate

Joining YPP does not require linking to Revelator’s MCN. Any channel that meets the requirements above can apply for YPP directly through YouTube.

Linking to Revelator’s MCN is an additional, optional step that provides benefits beyond standard YPP membership — including a boost in search results and recommendations, Content ID superpowers for the channel’s videos, and consolidated royalty reporting. See Linking a Channel to Revelator’s MCN for details.

Important Your channel must be accepted into YPP before it can be linked to Revelator’s MCN. Applying for YPP and linking to the MCN are two separate processes. Make sure you apply for YPP within 3 months of your channel being linked to the MCN, and that your first application is successful.

Not every video on a YPP channel will monetize

Being in YPP does not guarantee that all videos on a channel earn revenue. Individual videos may be restricted from monetization if they:

  • Contain audio or video claimed by a third-party rights holder
  • Are flagged as not advertiser-friendly by YouTube’s automated or manual review
  • Violate Community Guidelines
