Sometimes when you attempt to distribute a release you may be blocked from distributing it and receive this message:

The artist 'XXXXX' is on a Spotify watchlist. Please email support to confirm that you have the rights to distribute material with this artist. Note that such releases can be delayed 24h as Spotify needs to manually approve the release to go live.

Getting your release approved for distribution to Spotify differs depending on your account type.

STANDALONE ACCOUNTS (accounts where external users do not sign-up to create distribution accounts)

  1. Email us to request that we enable distribution of your release.
  2. After we respond and you deliver your release, please email us back once more with the following information:
    1. The UPC of the release.
    2. Whether the artist being flagged is indeed the well-known artist, or whether it's just another artist with the same name.
    3. Whether you expect to frequently distribute this artist, or whether this is more of an exception.
  3. We will send this information to Spotify. Note that such releases can be delayed 24h as Spotify needs to manually approve the release to go live.

PARENT-CHILD ACCOUNTS (accounts where external users sign-up to create distribution accounts)

  1. If this is the well-known artist and not just another artist with the same name, establish whether your client has the rights to distribute this artist. If they do, then:
    1. Whitelist their account: Payees > the payee account for the release > Whitelisted (button)
  2. The next step after that depends on whether you are a member of Spotify's Preferred Partner Program (PPP) or not:
    1. If you are NOT a member of Spotify's Preferred Partner Program (PPP)
      1. Deliver your release and email us the following information:
        1. The release's UPC.
        2. Whether the artist being flagged is indeed the well-known artist, or whether it's just another artist with the same name.
        3. Whether you expect to frequently distribute this artist, or whether this is more of an exception.
      2. After the release is delivered, please de-whitelist the account so that you are notified if ever this account distributes a new release with an artist on the Spotify watchlist. Note that this is crucial as all such releases must be cleared manually with Spotify for them to go live (an if the account remains whitelisted you will not be notified when a future release also needs to be cleared).
    2. If you are a member of Spotify's Preferred Partner Program (PPP)
      1. Fill out their watched artist clearance form once the release has been delivered to Spotify.
      2. De-whitelist the account so that you are notified if ever this account distributes a new release with an artist on the Spotify watchlist.
